Introduction
In 1966, Dharma Master Cheng Yen established the Buddhist Tzu Chi Merit Association in Hualien, Taiwan, guided by the principles of loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. Her mission: to relieve suffering and bring happiness to those in need. Over time, Tzu Chi’s efforts expanded to encompass the Four Missions—Charity, Medicine, Education, and Humanistic Culture—which later evolved into the Eight Footprints, adding International Relief, Bone Marrow Donation, Environmental Protection, and Community Volunteerism.
Under Dharma Master Cheng Yen’s leadership, Tzu Chi volunteers around the world embody the spirit of "Unconditional Universal Love," applying compassion and wisdom to bring the Dharma into everyday life and serve as living Bodhisattvas. Transcending political, racial, religious, and national boundaries, Tzu Chi has grown into a global humanitarian organization. As of June 2024, its relief efforts have reached 136 countries. The Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation (USA) holds special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
