Introduction
The Tzu Chi Foundation originated in 1966 when Dharma Master Cheng Yen, while helping the poor, witnessed a destitute woman who had to leave the hospital due to her inability to afford medical treatment. This experience led her to realize that "poverty and illness generate each other," prompting her to initiate free medical services. In 1972, she established the Tzu Chi Free Clinic for the Poor on Ren'ai Street in Hualien City.
In 1979, Dharma Master Cheng Yen made a vow to build a hospital to improve medical standards in eastern Taiwan. With the loving support of many people, Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital began operations in 1986 and was upgraded to become eastern Taiwan's only medical center in 2002.
Since its establishment, even when facing severe challenges such as typhoons, earthquakes, and epidemics, the medical staff have remained steadfast at their posts, demonstrating the spirit of great love. In recent years, Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital has been dedicated to promoting integrative Chinese and Western precision medicine, as well as holistic healthcare. The hospital has strengthened innovation and international cooperation, and through charitable medical missions, has brought Taiwan's medical expertise to the world, continuing to protect life, safeguard health, and preserve love.
